I think I just solved the MC and DC conflict.....Or did I?
I just got off a conversation with my friend who hates DC a bit. Wait. That was an understatement. He loathes DC. A lot. And I like DC. I mean, yes, I do also like the new Avengers: Infinity War thingy, but I prefer Batman and Wonder woman to Captain America any day. So anyway, after the conversation, I rewatched some of the movies (hey, I’m on summer break) and finally came up with some takeaway points for both the MCU and the DCU that might pass along without getting yelled at by the little trolls under the bridge.
And these differences are as different as night and day. And that's what it is, night and day. MC movies have the basic type of plots:
- Person exists
- Has an ‘ok’ life (except Iron Man, cuz he was rich AF)
- Has a really bad week/month
- Comes across superpower
- The world is in danger
- He/she saves it
Well, of course, the MC has this mind-blowing tapestry of 18 movies that all came together and boiled down to the Infinity War and the one after that. Geez, talk about having a vision. But in the end, its the most simple philosophy in every movie: Good defeats evil. Given the exception of IW, EVERY movie the MC has made has a happy ending. I did watch all the 18 movies in CHRONOLOGICAL order during my Easter break, so I know what I'm talking about. What I'm trying to say is that MC has the generic formula, and despite the wonderful storylines and damn good visuals, you go to the movie knowing that the movie is gonna end on a happy note.
Now, when it comes to the DC, and if you know anything about DC, it is DARK. Dark AF. And there's not much room for tomfoolery or loose humour like in ‘Spiderman’ in DC. Nuh-uh. This is Gotham we are talking about. People should have evacuated that place a million years ago, but they haven't for some bizzare reason. And that's something you can take from DC. Gotham has a lot of bad things happening in it, and yet the citizens still keep going about their lives pretending like nothing is wrong. That's like most of the big cities on our planet, like New York, London, Bombay, Tokyo and so on. Thousands of songs or movies or poems centre on the beauty and grandiosity of these cities, and how they shelter the hopeful who migrate from all over the world in search of their dreams. But no one wants to talk about the dark alleyways where pocket knives glisten and rapists smirk. Gotham is THAT place. It has Batman. But it also has Joker. Speaking of which, Batman is a self-made hero, kinda similar to Ironman, but even he had help (though it didn’t seem like that at first.) And he has this one rule of not killing anyone. His stark opposite is Superman and Wonder woman, who are born with the abilities that Bruce strives for. Now, Superman and Wonder woman have a lot in common. They’re both immortal (duh) and they know that humanity is basically a lost cause, but they choose to fight and protect and guide it, even though humans turn against them.
And from what I learnt from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is that the world is bad. Its crazy, filled with bad people who look like the good ones. The only thing you can do is protect that nice, polite little persona inside you and protect it with all you have.
If you thought that all this is just nerdy and pointless, because they’re all fiction, then you need to have your head checked, because you missed the whole point.
